What to Know About Prostaglandin Eyelash Serums

Bimatoprost eyelash growth is supported by clinical studies, but that does not mean every lash serum works—or that a cosmetic serum has the same safety testing as a medicine. Bimatoprost has the strongest evidence among lash-growth ingredients. Prostaglandin-related products may also cause changes around the eyelids and eyes, and rules for selling them differ by market.

What Bimatoprost Eyelash Growth Evidence Shows

Bimatoprost is a prostamide analogue related to medicines used for glaucoma. In the United States, the FDA approved a 0.03% ophthalmic solution for eyelash hypotrichosis—lashes that are sparse or inadequate. Its use for lash growth followed observations of increased eyelash growth in people using related medicines for glaucoma.

In clinical studies, bimatoprost improved measures including eyelash length, thickness and darkness compared with a vehicle (the solution without the active ingredient). The 2024 review Eyelash Serums: A Comprehensive Review, by Maya Baiyasi and colleagues, concluded that bimatoprost’s efficacy is supported by multiple studies. Other prostaglandin ingredients may also have benefits, but their safety and effectiveness are less well established. Evidence for non-prostaglandin serums is also limited.

These results support an effect from bimatoprost, not a guarantee for an individual user or for every product that claims to stimulate growth. The studies do not establish that different over-the-counter formulas have the same active ingredient, strength or performance.

Possible Eyelash Serum Side Effects

Reported effects of prostaglandin-related medicines include eye redness, eyelid or nearby skin darkening, and changes in the lashes. Increased iris pigmentation—darkening of the colored part of the eye—has also been reported with this drug family. A 2007 review noted that some iris-color changes may not reverse after treatment ends. These risks are not equally well measured for every lash product, so findings from glaucoma medicines should not be treated as a precise estimate of risk from cosmetic use.

Another concern is prostaglandin-associated periorbitopathy: changes in the tissues around the eye, including reports of orbital fat loss. In a 2021 review, Kenneth D. Steinsapir and Samantha M. G. Steinsapir said that clinical trial design may have led to underreporting of application discomfort and periorbitopathy; they also noted that the risk of iris pigmentation was not adequately investigated. That means trial results may not capture every effect or show how often it occurs.

A separate Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society report, published in 2023, found evidence gaps in randomized trials measuring eye-surface outcomes from eyelash-growth products. If you develop persistent irritation or notice changes in your eye, eyelid or vision, seek advice from an eye-care professional.

How to Check a Lash Serum Label

Look for the active ingredient list, not just claims such as “lash-enhancing” or “clinically tested.” Names used for prostaglandin-related eye medicines include bimatoprost, latanoprost, travoprost and unoprostone. Bimatoprost is technically a prostamide analogue, rather than a prostaglandin analogue, so related products may not all use the same label wording. This is not an exhaustive list of cosmetic ingredients: a label may use a less familiar chemical name. If you are unsure, ask a pharmacist or eye-care professional rather than assuming that “prostaglandin-free” settles the question.

Check whether the product is sold as a medicine or a cosmetic, and read its directions and warnings. A product’s marketing claims alone do not tell you how well its safety or effectiveness has been assessed.

Why Rules Depend on Where You Live

In the US, bimatoprost 0.03% is FDA-approved for eyelash hypotrichosis. The 2024 review notes that over-the-counter eyelash products sold as cosmetics do not undergo FDA premarket assessment for efficacy and safety. That is different from approval of a specific medicine; it does not mean every cosmetic serum contains bimatoprost or has been shown to grow lashes.

Cosmetic definitions vary among countries, so US approval or sales status does not establish the rules in the UK, EU or Australia. Product classification can depend on the ingredient and how the product is presented. For a product sold where you live, check the relevant national medicines or cosmetics regulator rather than assuming the same rules apply everywhere.
